Junction Road roundabout is located on a busy arterial road in Campbelltown, NSW. The new roundabout was constructed to handle growing traffic congestion from several nearby schools and a busy shopping center. Unfortunately, the existing street lighting was not compliant with road safety requirements for the new roundabout, posing a serious safety risk to drivers and pedestrians.

Campbelltown City Council approached Leadsun with an urgent brief for the installation of fully compliant roundabout lighting with a very tight, six-week deadline and minimal disruption to traffic.

A NSW first—fully compliant roundabout lighting powered by the sun

Local Area Traffic Management Devices like roundabouts must comply with strict Australia and New Zealand Lighting Compliance standards (AS/NZS 1158.3.1 P). Leadsun’s team of in-house lighting engineers were able to design a fully compliant lighting solution for the Junction Road roundabout, specifying three AE6 solar-powered LED street lights, each producing a minimum of 3.5 Lux continuous lighting output from dusk until dawn.

To ensure sufficient power even on cloudy days, three 150-watt solar engines were paired with the 15-watt LED lights. The entire solution took only two days to install, with no trenching, cabling or connection to the electricity grid required. To minimise disruption, EZYTilt poles were used so all work could be completed at ground level without the need for a cherry picker.

A new benchmark for roundabout lighting

Junction Road roundabout sets a new benchmark for sustainable, compliant, and cost-effective roundabout lighting in Australia. Leadsun’s Business Development Manager for New South Wales, Gordon Manzione, said, “This was the first fully compliant solar powered LED street light solution for a roundabout undertaken by any NSW Local Government authority.”

Campbelltown City Council were pleased with the end result and the fast turnaround time which exceeded expectations. Most importantly, the new solar powered LED street lights at the Junction Road roundabout have significantly improved visibility and safety for drivers and pedestrians.
