How does a solar bollard light work?

Bollard lights powered by the sun

Just like conventional mains powered bollards, solar bollard lights deliver discreet, direct illumination with minimal light spill. However, unlike grid-powered bollard lights, a solar bollard light is powered by the sun.

A split system with optimally located solar engine

During the day, a remotely located Leadsun AE3 or AE6 series solar engine charges an on-board Lithium-ion battery. The solar bollard light system is designed so that the solar engine can be installed in a position where it receives the most direct sunlight, ensuring the bollards are reliably powered all year round.

Low-voltage wiring installed in a shallow trench connects the solar engine to up to 10 bollards, providing clean, reliable power at night.

Solar bollard lights are a more affordable option compared to electricity grid-connected lighting with lower upfront & life-cycle costs.

Installation costs vary depending on application, installation size, access and design. As a general rule though, installation costs for our solar bollard lights are around a quarter of that for a similar grid-powered lighting system.

A remotely located Leadsun AE3 or AE6 series solar engine including solar panel and on-board battery can power up to ten bollard lights. The system is designed so that the solar engine can be installed in a position where it receives the most direct sunlight, ensuring the bollards are reliably powered all year round.

No electrical connections or high voltage underground cabling is required for Leadsun solar bollard lighting.   Low-voltage wiring installed in a shallow trench connects the solar engine to up to 10 bollards. This means they can be fully installed along a typical pathway in about 20% of the usual time required for a conventional grid-powered system.

In Australia and New Zealand, all pubic lights including solar bollard lights must comply with Australian and New Zealand Lighting Standards. We provide a complete, fully engineered solution ensuring compliance with AS/NZS 1158.3.1:2020. All of our systems are designed to ensure at least 3 nights of continual lighting, even on cloudy days without needing any power from the electricity grid.

Our SMART solar bollard lights are robust, reliable mature technology, tried, tested on many thousands of installations over 15 plus years. They are economical when compared with grid-connected bollard lights, easier to install, sustainable with zero emissions from their operation, have no energy costs, are maintenance-free, Dark-sky compliant, and have optional wireless monitoring and control.

Leadsun bollard lights have been designed with a concealed LED module, recessed downwards on a 45° angle within the bollard head. This provides the LED protection and significantly reduces the need for cleaning or maintenance.

Normally, a Lithium-ion battery will last between five to eight years. However, with Leadsun’s patented, advanced battery technology we guarantee a battery will have at least 80% of its rated capacity at the end of up to 10 years. In practice, actual battery life can extend well beyond this with typical battery life being around 15 years.
