Leadsun solar mining lighting enhances safety of camp — setting foundations to drive cultural transformation.

Following ongoing issues within the industry and incidents of antisocial behaviour during planned maintenance periods, the client recognised the need for increased safety and security measures around accommodation sites. As such, they commissioned pathway & mining lighting throughout the accommodation area as an effective means of increasing nighttime security for FIFO workers returning to their
accommodation after dark.

FIFO working conditions
Long and physically demanding shifts are commonplace for FIFO workers in the mining industry. Operations at mine sites run for 24 hours, requiring many to work nighttime shift. As a result, FIFO working conditions can often be challenging; a likely factor contributing to poor staff retention.
Additionally, employee satisfaction and safety at FIFO mining accommodation sites is an issue of ever-increasing importance, especially in regard to women and gender-diverse staff. To enhance working conditions and improve safety, the client has planned several upgrades to their camps, including solar mine lights & pathway lighting throughout the accommodation area.
Sustainable, grid-free solar lighting
was the obvious solution
The mining and resource sector faces increasing pressure from the government to help Australia reach its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
This prompted the client to consider sustainable options, with the locations generous levels of uninhabited sunlight leading them to solar power.
Appealing form and function
Leadsun’s SMART solar lights were chosen for the project due to their clever, efficient and aesthetically pleasing design. The contemporary
black poles and sleek solar panels added opulence to the site landscape, whilst the warm 3000K output of the lighting is most sympathetic to
both humans and wildlife.
Additionally, Leadsun’s purpose-built lowerable poles and grid-free
capability also facilitated easy installation and maintenance, much to the delight of the client.
Outcome praised by workers
With the solar lights installed, pathways around the site are now well lit from dusk till dawn. On-site staff have praised the lighting, noting their
aesthetic appeal and easy maintenance in addition to improved night-time visibility and safety. The client is considering further expansion of workers’
accommodation at their site, and is hoping to engage Leadsun’s solar mining lighting systems for future developments.
