Project Overview
Due to many years of continual outages, frustrating disruptions, and ongoing, expensive repair costs to service the existing electric and pathway lighting, the Meadowvale Retirement Village was in desperate need of a final solution to their problems. This need was compounded when they realised that all the existing underground electric wiring needed to be replaced – an approach that Lendlease found to be cost-prohibitive and too disruptive to the environment. Lendlease then decided to look for an alternative, ‘grid-free’ solar street lamp lighting solution.

The Leadsun Solution
- 118 x AE3 Split Series Systems 118 x AE2 Series Split Systems (AE2 has now been superseded by the AE3 Series)
- Solar Module Size = 36W
- LED output = 10W
- Adaptive lighting control automatically dims lights to 30% during inactivity
Lithium-ion batteries provides 10+ years maintenance-free life span
Leadsun presented Lendlease with a grid-free, cost-effective and dependable solar street lighting solution that would also provide a more layered lighting solution with aesthetically pleasing solar street lamps. This custom outdoor lighting solution features low-glare, adaptive lighting control to create a safer and more inviting environment for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Working closely with NDY lighting consultants, Leadsun’s SMART solar lighting systems have been designed with car park lighting in mind, and always comply to the required lighting AS/NZ 1158.3.1 standards. It was calculated that 118 solar street lamps equipped with outdoor solar bulbs were required to sufficiently illuminate the pathways, driveways, and car parks throughout all areas.
Leadsun provided the AE3 series ‘split-system’ street lamps that were found to be both cost-effective and fit-for-purpose. This lighting series boasts a low-wattage asymmetrical lighting beam that controls spill light into the residential properties, yet ensures adequate, layered lighting for high traffic areas that matter most – an ideal solar lighting solution. As the residents didn’t want to have the areas over lit during periods of inactivity, the lights were programmed to mainly operate at 30% brightness. Then once movement is detected the light increases to full brightness for 30 seconds, allowing time for safe transit during the evening hours. The program function also increases the battery autonomy in the winter months when the nights are longer and the days are shorter.
All of the solar path lights and outdoor solar bulbs were safely installed with lowerable poles. This was to ensure that all works were carried out at ground-level, removing the need for working from heights or in dangerous machines. Finally, as the Leadsun solution required no underground cabling, the installation was undertaken efficiently and effectively without any destruction of existing nature strips, footpaths, roads and car park areas.
