Project Overview
With the Snowy Monaro region fast becoming a destination for cyclists and mountain biking enthusiasts, the council identified a need to make the Cooma Creek Path more accessible for longer hours in the evenings so locals and tourists can enjoy all that this region has to offer.
Solar Lamps for Enhanced Community Safety
The Snowy Monaro Regional Council has enhanced the Cooma Creek shared pathway by installing advanced solar lamps, significantly improving safety and accessibility for residents and visitors. This initiative aligns with the region’s commitment to sustainable development and community well-being.
The Cooma Creek pathway, stretching 2.5 kilometres from Rotary Oval on Murray Street to Nijong Ovals, is a popular route for cyclists and pedestrians. To extend its usability into the evening, the council utilised a $474,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund to install a grid-free solar lighting system
Challenges Addressed
Prior to the upgrade, the pathway lacked adequate lighting, limiting its use after dark and raising safety concerns. Traditional grid-connected lighting was considered but posed challenges, including higher costs, longer installation times, and potential disruptions during construction. The council sought a solution that was both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Leadsun's Solar Lamp Solution
Leadsun provided a 4-part, customised, comprehensive solar lighting system tailored to the pathway’s needs:
1. Solar Modules and Lamps: Installed 69 AE3 Series 55W stand-alone solar lamps, complemented by additional AE3 and AE6 Series solar engines powering multiple remote lights.
2. Energy Efficiency: Equipped with 10W LED luminaires operating from dusk to dawn, featuring adaptive lighting control that dims to 30% brightness during inactivity to conserve energy.
3. Durability and Maintenance: Utilised lowerable poles for safe, ground-level maintenance, with lithium-ion batteries designed for a maintenance-free lifespan exceeding 10 years.
4. Smart Technology: Integrated a wireless control and monitoring system for real-time management and future scalability.
Project Outcomes
The installation was completed nearly three weeks ahead of schedule, with minimal disruption to pathway users. The enhanced lighting has made the pathway safer and more accessible during evening hours, encouraging greater community use. Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Peter Beer noted, “The increased lighting is a very welcome addition to this popular walkway, and I know locals are feeling safer when walking along the path at night.”
