Cecil Newton Park Lighting

Civil works on a major upgrade of the main park in Mingenew, WA were well underway when the Council became aware of the need for better park lighting. By the time funding could be secured, construction work on the park upgrades was nearly finished. With the inaugural opening of the park only a week away, the new lighting had to be installed quickly and without disturbing the civil works already completed.

The light bulb moment

It was December, 2022 and group of residents had gathered in Cecil Newton Park in Mingenew, WA for their annual Christmas party. A major upgrade of the park was almost complete, and the group of friends and neighbours were keen to make the most of the new facilities. But as the sun sank lower in the sky, the mood shifted when the group realised how dark it had become.

Responding to community concerns after the gathering, the Shire of Mingenew applied for funding from CBH Group for new park lights.

Located 383 kilometres north of Perth. Mingenew is known as the ‘entrance to the Midwest wheatbelt’. CBH are a cooperative of approximately 3500 Western Australian grain growing businesses committed to supporting the communities they operate in, including Mingenew.

Several months after applying, Matt Fanning, the Shire of Mingenew CEO happily announced: “We have been successful in obtaining a grant for lighting of the park from CBH. We will be placing 10 solar lights and it is expected the works will be completed in the coming week.”

A tight timeline

With civil works nearing completion and the Shire keen to inaugurate the park, Leadsun’s West Australian distributor, BMH Electrics were given just one week to install the new park lighting.

Solar powered park lighting ensures a quick turnaround

As soon as the funding announcement was made, BMH Electrics swung into action. Working alongside contractors still completing civil works on the park, they installed ten AE3 all-in-one LED park lights on existing light poles and a bespoke link-light for a nearby sculpture.

The entire installation was completed in under a week. Thanks to the on-board solar engine powering each LED light, no trenching or cabling was needed for mains power — a critical factor ensuring civil works would not be disturbed.

Cecil Newton Park Lights Shine Bright

Despite the extremely tight deadline, all ten lights were up and running and ready for the Mayor’s grand opening the following week. Reflecting on the project a year later, CEO Matt Fanning said:

“Council installed the new Leadsun solar lights over 12 months ago in its main community park and the results are fantastic and a necessary inclusion for the completion of the project.”

Programmed to operate from dusk until dawn, the new park lights shine much needed light at night on Cecil Newton Park.

Leadsun Operations Manager, Josh Browne, said that: “[The Cecil Newton Park Upgrade] was a great project to take on… we are glad we could help install within the time limit and allocated budget.”
