Residents welcome better street lights at Valley Village Mews Retirement Village

Independence is the key to life and good living at Valley Village Mews Retirement Village. Built in the 1980’s, the village was illuminated by an outdated ornamental street light system that was no longer fit for purpose, leaving elderly residents in the dark. Better street lights were needed to make the village safer at night and to promote the independence and interconnectedness of residents.

Better street lights for a thriving community
A village community with sprawling parklands
Located in the City of Greater Dandenong in Melbourne’s outer-eastern suburbs, Valley Village Mews is a spacious retirement village enjoying expansive views of the nearby Dandenong Ranges. The village is uniquely designed around a sprawling private parkland and has a calm and relaxed semi-rural ambience.
Inadequate street lighting keeping residents up at night
Inadequate lighting in the village’s carparks and streets however was a safety and security concern for residents and visitors. Taking cues from traditional old English street lamps but incorporating a more rational, mid-eighties aesthetic, the original street lights featured open sides that tended to project light out and into the windows of adjacent houses instead of onto the ground. Better street lights were needed to make the village safer at night and promote the independence and interconnectedness of this close-knit community — without keeping them up at night.
Solar Street Lights the smart solution
Better lighting with less glare
A new, fully compliant solar street lighting system was designed from the ground up for Valley Village Mews Retirement Village.
31 Leadsun AE6 solar street lights were installed, incorporating LED fixtures that significantly reduce lighting glare. To further minimise light pollution, Leadsun engineers directed lights away from houses and onto the ground where illumination was needed most.
Less disruption for residents
Each solar street light also included its own on-board battery so connection to the electricity grid was not required. This meant no cabling or trenching work was needed, reducing installation time and disruption for elderly residents.
A solar street light success story
Several years on, the solar street lights are still shining strong and residents and staff couldn’t be happier. Judy, a Senior Carer at Valley Village Mews Retirement Village said, “It makes evening strolls around the village far easier, and parking is more simple.”
The project exceeded Valley Village Mew’s expectations and residents feel safer and more secure at night. The street lights encourage greater independence and connectedness and perhaps most importantly of all, residents haven’t lost any sleep.
