ASNZ:1158.3.1 category V4

Project Overview

The City of Hobsons Bay, located in Melbourne’s western suburbs, is dedicated to improving public health and safety for its residents. In response to community concerns about inadequate lighting street lights on Merton Street in Altona, the council sought an effective solution to enhance visibility and security in the area.

Project Overview: Installing Sustainable Self Lighting Street Lights

To address the insufficient lighting street lights on a 160-metre section of Merton Street, the City of Hobsons Bay engaged Leadsun and GE as the preferred suppliers and contractors. The objective was to design and install a reliable solar street lighting system that would improve illumination, ensure compliance with ASNZ:1158.3.1 category V4 standards, and promote sustainability.

Leadsun and GE were nominated as the preferred suppliers and contractor to design and install a quality and reliable ‘solar lighting’ system for roadways, using the industry approved GE Evolve LED fixture (1600 Lumens output) to illuminate a section of unlit roadway (160m) on Merton Street, Altona.

Challenges in Upgrading Self Lighting Street Lights

The project faced several challenges, including:

Existing Underground Infrastructure: The presence of underground power and communication lines posed a risk during installation, necessitating careful planning to avoid damage.

Safety Concerns: Maintaining safety for both workers and the public during installation was paramount, requiring methods that minimised disruption.

A Smart Solar Lighting Plan

Leadsun provided a comprehensive solar-powered street lighting solution featuring:

AE6 Series Solar Engines: Ten 200W solar engines paired with GE ‘Evolve’ 16W LED light heads were installed to deliver optimal illumination.

Adaptive Lighting Control: The system includes adaptive lighting control that automatically dims lights to 30% during periods of inactivity, conserving energy.

Non-Destructive Installation: To protect existing underground services, a non-destructive hydro/suction excavation method was employed, ensuring safe and efficient installation without damaging infrastructure.

Lowerable Pole Design: A unique lowerable pole concept was utilised, allowing for ground-level maintenance without the need for cranes or lifting equipment, enhancing safety and reducing maintenance costs.

Leadsun Solution

  • 10 x AE6 Series – 200W solar engine
  • GE ‘Evolve’ 16W LED light heads
  • Adaptive lighting control automatically dims lights to 30% during inactivity
  • Lithium-ion batteries provides 10+ years maintenance-free life span

Before installing solar engines and LED fixtures, important consideration was needed to the existing underground power and communication infrastructure installed throughout the area, which posed a significant risk of being damaged with traditional excavation equipment.

A unique installation method using non-destructive Hydro / Suction excavation equipment, was proposed by Leadsun, which safely excavated the footing holes without any risk of damaging underground services.

Ten Leadsun 200W solar engines & GE ‘Evolve’ 16W LED fixtures were installed in optimal locations (solar irradiance & lighting performance) along a 160 metre section of road reserve and rail-line area.

Using a unique ‘lowerable pole’ concept developed to safely install and service the solar lighting equipment at ground level, without use of any cranes or lifting equipment, the project was successfully completed in only 3 days, without disruption to vehicular or pedestrian traffic along the roadway.

Solar Success!

The successful deployment of smart lighting street lights on Merton Street in Altona exemplifies how innovative, sustainable solutions can effectively address urban infrastructure challenges. Leadsun’s expertise in solar street lighting has not only enhanced public safety but also provided an eco-friendly and cost-effective model for future projects. This initiative underscores the City of Hobsons Bay’s commitment to improving community well-being through thoughtful and sustainable urban planning.
